Historian Thassos Sakellaropoulos and journalist and writer Ilias Maglinis take part in the action “Walking around the city with Melenya Lemonia” with an inspection of the place of execution of the Six in November 1922. Today’s tour is coordinated by a historian and guide Eleni Papakosta.
The trial and execution of the “six” in November 1922 was one of the last chapters of the Asia Minor catastrophe, the greatest collective tragedy that modern Greece has experienced. Almost two months after the military collapse on the eastern coast of the Aegean, the pro-Venezuelan warlords Plastiras, Gonatas and Pangalos tried and executed those who had ruled the country and led it to destruction in the past two years: the five political heads of the pro-royal faction and the last commander-in-chief of the Greek army.
Sakellaropoulos and Maglinis will tell a tragic story, its backstory and its ramifications, its hushed up aspects and its tragic climaxes. And they will consider in detail the dispute about the correctness or incorrectness of the execution, a dispute that remains bloody to this day.
