PM calls for parliament to be dissolved and elections to be called

During his visit to the President of the Republic, Katherine Sakellaropoulou, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis proposed the dissolution of Parliament and the announcement of elections. As he characteristically said: “I have the pleasure of conveying to you the cabinet act recommending the dissolution of parliament and the calling of national elections on May 21 in four weeks. This is required by the relevant articles of the Constitution, Article 41 in essence, but the government has practically exhausted its term of office, as I assumed from the very beginning that this should be done and this is required by the institutional continuity of the state, so that citizens can also evaluate in the upcoming elections all the activities of our governments and act and make their decisions accordingly,” the Prime Minister said.

He described the election as “a great celebration of democracy” and wished that “there will be a fruitful confrontation of arguments so that citizens can soberly decide who should govern them over the next four years.”

He also called for “staying away from toxicity and extreme behavior that doesn’t fit with the general climate of the time.”

Finally, he expressed his hope that “the pre-election period will become a springboard for the greatest possible participation of citizens in this great democratic process”, referring primarily to the younger generation and their participation in elections, he said that “this is a bet for all of us, and ultimately they must know that they must participate in the decisions that will be made about their own future, and not refuse them.

For her part, the President of the Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, wished “a calm and fruitful pre-election period for the benefit of the country.”

Earlier, members of the Council of Ministers signed by appeal the relevant Act of the body.

It is expected that the relevant presidential decree will be submitted to Parliament in the afternoon.
