On Friday, the Russian Foreign Ministry warned of “dangerous” NATO statements regarding Ukraine’s entry into the alliance, writes AFP.
“NATO aims to ‘defeat’ Russia in Ukraine and, in order to motivate Kyiv, promises that after the end of the conflict, the country can be accepted into the alliance,” said the spokeswoman of the ministry, Maria Zakharova.
This happened after NATO Secretary General Jen Stoltenberg visited Kyiv on Thursday and declared that “Ukraine’s future is in NATO.”
Stoltenberg said he had discussed a “multi-year support initiative” with President Volodymyr Zelensky, adding that it would help Ukraine transition from Soviet-era equipment and doctrine to “NATO standards.” This will “ensure full interaction with the alliance,” Stoltenberg said.
His visit and statements regarding Ukraine’s accession to NATO were rebuffed by Russia. On Thursday, the Kremlin again stated that preventing Kyiv from joining NATO is one of its key goals.
“Such statements are short-sighted and frankly dangerous. They can lead to the final collapse of the European security system,” Zakharova said.
On Friday, during a meeting of the allies at the Ramstein Air Base in Germany, Stoltenberg also confirmed that Ukraine will join the military alliance.
He told reporters that all NATO allies agreed that Ukraine should become a member, but did not give a final date when that would happen.
