South Africa: 10 family members killed in armed ambush

The gunmen stormed a farmhouse in a town near Pietermaritzburg, South Africa and ambushed a family, killing 10 people.

Police did not specify a motive for the attack. Two suspects have been detained in the murder of seven women and three men. A third suspect fled and their fourth accomplice was killed in a shootout with police.

The youngest of the victims was a 13-year-old boy.

South Africa, a country of 60 million people, has one of the highest homicide rates in the world. About 20,000 murders are registered annually. According to Gun Free South Africa, an organization that fights gun ownership, an average of 30 people are killed every day.

“This is a terrible crime scene. So many people have gone missing here,” said Beki Chele, the police minister, speaking to the SABC public television station from Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal. Sele said the police administration should discuss whether the province needs more police resources.

In January, gunmen killed eight people and wounded three others at a birthday party in Geberh in the Eastern Cape.
