Economou on the Georgoulis case: SYRIZA’s attitude is hypocritical

Questions about the actions of the SYRIZA leadership in the case of the MEP, Alexis Georgoulisa government spokesman asked. Yannis Oikonomou.

“We have little to say about the substance of the matter, and there is no room for political confrontation. The case is in court. We all respect the courage of this woman who came forward and reported. We are always with the victims and those who break the veil of silence, whether it be gender or domestic violence, so that they come to the surface and be treated with justice and an organized state, as they should be,” Mr. Oikonomu emphasized on MEGA TV.

However, as he added: “However, in my opinion, there are three serious issues in their political dimension regarding the official opposition party in connection with this case. I repeat, not the essence of what there can be no talk of confrontation.

Question one: From SYRIZA they say – and correctly – that we cannot respond to rumors. What we did not know, there were rumors, we called him, he did not tell us, we could not find out. The problem is that in similar incidents in the past, when it was not about a political figure, but about people with other qualities, on the basis of rumors, they demanded a reaction not just from the government or from state officials, but from Madame … Mendoni, for example, were “crucified”.

And Mr. Economou continued: “Perhaps this is an opportunity for the parties to reconsider politically – and in this particular case, the official opposition, because it was they who raised this particular “crusade” at the time – their position. Not two meters and two stations. Let us know that at some point when we are digging holes or when we get into toxicity to choke the enemy, there may come a point where we too will face similar problems.”

The government spokesman then asked a second question: “Even if it is proven that Mr. Georgoulis did what he is accused of doing, the court will decide – what does that mean? That tomorrow morning I or any member of the New Democracy could come out and call SYRIZA a “rapist party”? Possible; Are these serious things in an organized state? No one is allowed on the altar of political confrontation to identify an entire faction, an entire party with the criminal behavior of its individual members. Were there not leaflets from SYRIZA youth saying “rich, smart, smart, we are not impressed that you are in a hurry” in the Thessaloniki case, which at some point took a completely different turn? Wasn’t there a hashtag “ND pedophiles” from certain lines and military forces that included accusations, unsubstantiated rumors regarding immigration and child abuse, and various other such unbelievable things? Were there no such statements or insinuations regarding these abusive acts? »

And he added: “Regarding this case, it would be nice to calmly – and now in the pre-election period – to reflect a little on how hypocritical and how toxic the attitude that on the altar of political confrontation someone believes that they can temporarily receive partisan and political benefits, identifying or generalizing.

Finally, the third point raised by Mr. Economou concerns “sensitivity different from the official opposition towards someone who is under the control of justice – and has been rightly excluded from a parliamentary group accused of a serious crime – here, but where there is a unanimous conviction for dereliction of duty, for the most dishonorable for a public figure, not only has not been removed, but still remains in the ballots and in the forefront. These three questions are political.”

“During these four years, very important steps have been taken to encourage women, those who are being abused, to open their mouths for welfare and support for the actions of the state. It is worth saying, because especially in these moments, not fear should prevail, but the courage and support of society and the state towards the victims of such behavior,” said Mr. Economou.

“The government has a strict but fair immigration policy”

Referring to immigration and answering a related question: “There is a chaotic difference between the politics and perceptions of New Democracy and the official opposition. It is expressed in its various dimensions. In how we react to slander, rumors or accusations against our country coming from abroad from smugglers, from different people who have an interest in harming the country and immigration. The case of the allegedly dead little Maria in Evros is the most typical – but not the only one – or the slander against the men and women of the coast guard that they allegedly stripped refugees or illegal immigrants and drowned them in the Aegean Sea, which were formulated against the country and other such incredible things . The government has deliberately chosen a strict but fair immigration policy,” he said.

And he added: “We believe that yesterday’s development in the European Parliament, which, among other things, leaves open the possibility of funding measures such as the extension of the fence to Evros, justifies a specific choice for a very significant measure to protect our borders, but also a significant reward for how we perceive our policy on illegal migration flows, both on land and at sea. Mr. Papadimoulis’s attempt, through the left, to impede the country’s efforts has failed.”
