Rafael Nadal is still nursing a left leg injury and the Iberian champion announced on Thursday that he will withdraw from next week’s ATP Masters 1000 in Madrid.
Rafael Nadal also withdrew from ATP Madrid
Rafa is taking all precautions ahead of Roland Garros (May 28-June 11) and announced on Instagram that he will not compete at the Caja Magica, which he has won five times (2005, 2010, 2013, 2014, 2017). .
An iliopsoas injury was supposed to keep him out for 6-8 weeks, but it’s been 14 since the Spaniard last played (he was beaten by Mackenzie McDonald at the Australian Open). Nadal already had to withdraw from seven tournaments: Doha, Dubai, Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Barcelona and Madrid.
It remains to be seen whether he can recover in time to take part in the Rome Masters, the final tournament before Roland Garros (where Rafa has won 14 of his 22 Grand Slam titles).
“I haven’t talked to you directly for a long time. It has been a difficult few weeks and months. As you know, I suffered a serious iliopsoas muscle injury in Australia. Initially, the recovery period was expected to be 6 to 8 weeks, but now we are at 14. The reality is that the situation is not what we expected.
All medical indications were followed, but for some reason the development was not as we were told at first, and we found ourselves in a difficult situation. Weeks passed and I expected to be able to play the most important tournaments of my career, such as Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Madrid, Rome, Roland Garros, and I still miss Monte Carlo and Barcelona. Unfortunately, I will not be able to be present in Madrid.
The wound hasn’t healed yet and I can’t figure out what I need to compete. I’ve been working out, but a few days ago I decided to change course a bit, do another treatment and see if things improve to try and get to what’s next. I can’t give a timeline because if I knew I would tell you, but I don’t. This is how it is now.
I also want to send a special hello to all the Madrid and Spanish public because I missed the two tournaments played here at home. You all know what it means to me to play in these tournaments. I have no choice but to try to have the right mindset during this period, to try to give myself an opportunity to compete in one of the tournaments that are left after the clay season, and I have no choice but to work and son with the right mindset.
Hugs to all, as soon as I have news I will let you know. Thank you!” – Rafael Nadal in social networks.
The Mutua Madrid Open will be held from April 26 to May 7 and is part of the ATP Masters 1000 category. The total prize fund is 7,705,780 euros, and the title champion is Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz.
