Three dolphins were found dead on a beach in Efor, the discovery was made by several people who posted images of the mammals on social media. The public organization Mare Nostrum announced that a dead dolphin was also found in Constanta, News.ro reported.
The Eforie Online Facebook page posted a video of a dead dolphin lying on the shore.
“Unfortunately, another dolphin was pulled from the sea on the beach in Efor! It is clearly visible that he suffered from fishing nets! There is also a piece of net in the beak and the tail has already been cut off!”, the message in the post reads.
In the comments on this post, two other people announced that they had seen two dead dolphins on the beach in Efor and posted photos of them, showing that they were different specimens.
The non-governmental organization Mare Nostrum later announced that in addition to the three dolphins found dead in Eforie Nord, another one was found in Constanta.
“In the last two days, four specimens of dolphins have washed up on the beaches of Efori Nord (3) and Constanta (1). In all reported cases, our colleagues from the NGO Mare Nostrum were able to detect interactions with fishing nets. All specimens are part of the bottlenose dolphin species (Tursiops truncatus ponticus),” Mare Nostrum reported.
Kostin Timofte, coordinator of the biodiversity conservation department of the non-governmental organization Mare Nostrum, said that the individuals have web marks on the surface of their bodies.
“Specimens from Efori had net marks on the surface of the body, and one specimen had a severed tail, used by fishermen to release the net without damaging it when a dolphin gets caught in it. In the case of the Constantia specimen, it had no net marks, but instead had various subcutaneous hemorrhages on the underside, at the level of the jaw, pectoral fins, and pectoral cavity, suggesting a correlation with accidental capture in a fishing net. “, Kostin Timofte explained.
