THE synthetic fuel There has been a lot of talk about them lately: indeed, while the death sentence for internal combustion engine cars was slated for 2035, the European Union has just softened its stance and will allow the use of CO2-neutral fuels after that date.

Thus, even if they are still small and expensive at present, synthetic fuels may allow manufacturers to continue marketing internal combustion engines after this fateful date. This is the case for Porsche, which is investing heavily in this solution, which should be the fuel of tomorrow.

Synthetic fuel: Volkswagen does not believe in it

However, opinions differ in the German group: the boss of the Volkswagen brand Thomas Schaefer just be critical regarding synthetic fuel during an interview with our colleagues fromAutomotive news.

The source, according to the German leader, is synthetic fueleffort spent : “Volkswagen will stop producing internal combustion engines by 2033, so why spend money on technology that won’t do you any good?” »he scolds.

However, Schaefer does not want to overload Porsche boss Oliver Blume: “I do not believe that Blume is behind the German lobbying work in favor of biofuels. In addition, biofuels are often misunderstood: they play a role in decarbonizing existing cars, but they will not replace electric cars.”– he specified.

Synthetic fuel: other interested producers

That won’t stop Porsche from continuing to believe in synthetic fuel: the German sports firm recently has an e-fuel plant in Chile and has acquired a 12.5% stake in specialist company Highly Innovative Fuels (HIF).

Among the competition, several manufacturers also believe in this alternative fuel: this applies to Ferrari, even if the brand with a prancing horse will sell electric cars, not forgetting Mazda, Renault or Lamborghini.

Currently, synthetic fuel is still marginal because its price remains very high. However, with the democratization of this technology, its price should be lowered in the future to possibly allow it to be adopted by the masses.
