Swiss bank Credit Suisse obstructed a decades-long investigation into its dealings with Nazi clients and Nazi-linked accounts, a US Senate committee said Tuesday.
Credit Suisse launched an investigation into claims by a human rights group that the bank had Nazi-linked accounts and did not disclose them even during Holocaust investigations decades ago. A recent Senate committee investigation into the matter found that the bank did interfere with the investigation and “inexplicably interrupted the work” of an independent investigator who was monitoring it.
“Information we have received shows that the bank unreasonably limited the investigation and refused to consider new evidence that emerged during the investigation,” said Republican Senator Chuck Grassley, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee.
Credit Suisse defended its internal assessment, saying the investigation found no evidence to support the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s core claims that dormant accounts maintained by Credit Suisse contained assets of Holocaust victims.
A spokesperson for AlixPartners, the consulting firm hired by Credit Suisse to investigate, did not respond to a request for comment.
But a Senate committee said more research was needed to determine the asset value of some of the bank accounts held by the Nazis. in the period after 1945.
The commission said in a statement that it launched its own investigation after receiving “credible allegations of possible wrongdoing” related to the internal investigation, including the dismissal of the ombudsman who oversaw it.
As a reminder, Credit Suisse was taken over by its historic domestic rival UBS when it faced a huge liquidity problem a few weeks ago.
