At least one person died and five were injured Tuesday when a large section of a garage collapsed in south Manhattan, New York, US metropolitan authorities said.
“There were six workers in the building at the time of the collapse. Four of them were hospitalized, their condition is stable. One person died, one person refused treatment,” New York City Fire Chief John Esposito said at a press conference.
Images shared on social media show cars, some piled on top of each other or overturned, with plumes of smoke billowing from the collapsed building.

The structure is “unstable,” New York City Mayor Eric Adams said, adding that an operation to find out if there are other people stuck in the rubble is still ongoing.
The parking lot collapsed “to the basement,” a city official said.

Authorities are using drones and a robotic “dog” to avoid deploying rescue teams inside the building as the rest of the building is still in danger of collapsing.
