
For special groups of the public, from today it is possible to visit the famous tombstone of the Kasta mound in the municipality. Amphipolisnine years after its discovery by archaeological excavations.
Scholars, researchers, educators, travel agents and representatives of the self-government of the Serres regional unit, divided into groups of five, accompanied by a guard or an archaeologist, have the opportunity to visit the inside of the mound and admire part of its decoration up close.
According to Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni, visitors will have a satisfactory understanding of the monument as they will be able to see the welded marble material, the sphinxes at the entrance and the caryatids that have been preserved.
Also, the first visitors will be able to see from afar the grave trench, which impresses with its size and design.
Opened to the general public in 2027
Visits will last a few minutes and will be carried out in consultation with the Ephorate of Antiquities of Serra until early June, when they will be temporarily interrupted to begin work on the removal of scaffolding from inside the monument, and will continue immediately thereafter.
However, the burial monument will be handed over to the general public in full in 2027, after the completion of all necessary infrastructure work, restoration and improvement of the surrounding area.
Entrance to the current stage is by appointment and without a ticket.
