“Meet the formidable AS90 155mm self-propelled gun on which the British Army trains Ukrainian tank crews,” said the Ministry of Defense of Great Britain the other day, which released a video showing the weapon already installed under the Ukrainian flag.

“The program is part of the UK’s long-standing commitment to support Ukraine in its struggle with Russia. #AlăturiDeUkraina,” added the British Ministry of Defense on Twitter.

In January of this year, the government in London announced that it intended to send 30 units of such weapons to Ukraine and that Ukrainian crews would be trained on British soil to use them. On April 23 of last year, the former Prime Minister of Great Britain, Boris Johnson, already stated that the Ukrainian military was training in the Kingdom.

What capabilities do AS-90 howitzers have?

These tracked guns can launch standard 155 mm shells to a distance of 25 or 30 kilometers, depending on the length of the barrel, which is available in two variants. It is not known which of the two versions the British government promised Ukraine.

AS-90 howitzers can fire 3 rounds per 10 seconds (interval mode), 6 per minute for 3 minutes (intense fire) and 2 per minute per hour (continuous fire).

This howitzer, nicknamed “Braveheart” by the British Armed Forces, entered service in 1992, and the “AS-90” designation comes from the fact that its manufacturer, BAE Systems Land Systems, introduced it as a weapon system at the time. for the 1990s.

From 1992 to 1995, only 179 such howitzers were produced, which makes the figure that Britain promised Ukraine even higher.

These British howitzers can be compared with the Panzerhaubitze 2000, which is supplied to Ukraine by the German army.
