Petition for removal of his parliamentary immunity and withdrawal from the Eurogroup SYRIZA – PS was filed MEP Alexis Georgoulis after complaining about it, while SYRIZA announced that it was leaving the party pending clarification.

“Unfortunately, we live in difficult and dangerous times. Much to my surprise, I am informed that a deliberately false and defamatory complaint has been filed against me regarding an incident allegedly occurring three years ago.

In the face of this false and insulting attack, which is being carried out – probably not by chance – a few days before the national elections, I intend to carry on my fight for justice, for the truth and the restoration of my name, demanding the removal of my immunity in the European Parliament.

With their statement, SYRIZAdeclares that the MEP is suspended from participation in SYRIZA until his case is clarified: “MP Alexis Georgoulis is suspended from participation in SYRIZA-PS in connection with the information we received today about the complaint against him and in view of the need to fully clarify the relevant case.”

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola announced at the beginning of the plenary work in Strasbourg that there is a request from the Belgian authorities to lift the immunity of a member of the European Parliament.

“I received a request from the competent Belgian authorities to remove the parliamentary immunity from Alexis Georgoulis. The request has been submitted to the legal commission,” Ms. Metsola said.
