Four Turkish soldiers were wounded in artillery and rocket attacks by Kurdish fighters on their bases in northern Syria, prompting Ankara’s retaliatory strike, the Turkish government said.
The Ministry of Defense claimed responsibility for attacks against Turkish rebels on the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and the People’s Self-Defense Forces (YPG), a Syrian Kurdish militia that is a key component of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a US-backed organization.
In recent years, Turkey has carried out several military operations in northern Syria and has dozens of bases in the region.
Four soldiers were taken to the hospital. “There is an adequate response to the terrorists, with strong strikes on objects,” the ministry added.
Earlier today, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in a campaign speech that Turkey “will never be safe as long as there are armed terrorist organizations in northern Syria and Iraq.” “We hope that in the next presidential term we will intensify our efforts in this direction,” he added, referring to the May 14 elections.
