The Drangheta Mafia is the dominant organized crime force in Italy, as its activities extend far beyond its traditional home in Calabria, according to a report by the Italian Mafia Investigation Authority (DIA) to Parliament released today.
According to the report, this crime syndicate is present in almost all regions of Italy, as well as in many foreign countries, including Spain, France, Great Britain, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Romania, Bulgaria, Austria, Canada, USA, Colombia, Peru and Argentina.
The report states that Drangeta assumed this leadership role due to its close-knit structure and “military” capabilities, as well as strong ties to South American drug cartels.
According to the same source, in recent years, Drangeta has also developed logistics operations for its drug smuggling operations in West Africa, specifically in Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea-Bissau and Ghana.
Drangheta is one of the four largest organized crime syndicates in Italy, along with Cosa Nostra in Sicily, Camorra in Campania and Sacra Corona Unita in Puglia.
