Doctor Alin Demetrian of the Emergency District Hospital in Craiova, one of Craiova’s best-known surgeons, is accused by prosecutors of the deaths of four patients whose arteries were severed during a biopsy, causing profuse bleeding. The victims were between 64 and 77 years old, and the deaths occurred in 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2023.

The son of a patient who died in 2019 says his father went for a biopsy because he suspected cancer.

  • “We took him to Dr. Demetrian and he told us he would make an incision here (on the neck) and nothing would happen, maybe he would bleed a little.
  • When he made the cut, he came out and told us that he had accidentally cut an artery, a vein. For now, I want them to do justice. By doing this act with the lawsuit, there are other people who can survive because someone like him is no longer part of the system,” Marius Barbu, son of the deceased patient, told Digi 24.

According to the press secretary of the Craiova District Hospital, Kristina Geormanianu, doctor Alin Demetrian has been on vacation since April 3.

The doctor’s lawyers say that in all cases we are talking about seriously ill patients, in an advanced stage.

Doctor Alin Demetrian, one of the most famous surgeons in Craiova, was brought to the Prosecutor’s Office of the Craiova Court on Tuesday, which decided to take him under judicial control for 60 days. Prosecutors accuse him of accidentally severing a patient’s artery during surgery in 2019. He is accused of the same actions in the case of three other patients.

  • “It was established that on 13.09.2019, as the chief operating physician, during the performance of his duties at the Kraiów County Emergency Clinical Hospital, as a result of non-compliance with the measures provided for the implementation of medical activities, Demetrian Alin-Dragosh, a doctor of thoracic surgery, was wrongly performed a Carlens anterior cervical mediastinoscopy on a patient with BD, during which he accidentally cut the patient’s right brachiocephalic trunk, causing massive external hemorrhage, resulting in the patient’s violent death on the morning of 09/14/2019, between the medical action performed by the defendant and the patient’s death by the presence of an unconditional direct causal relationship.
  • The same person is suspected of committing, under similar circumstances, three more crimes of involuntary manslaughter as a result of a medical error, before. art 192 paragraph (2) of the Criminal Code,” reads the press release of the Prosecutor’s Office at the Court of Craiova, quoted by craiovaforum.ro.

Among the obligations that a doctor must observe during the period during which he is under judicial control is that he does not engage in the activity of a surgeon in either public or private medical institutions.

In 2015, Digi 24 wrote that doctor Alin Demetrian performed several interventions in the national premiere, he operated on lung tumors using minimally invasive techniques, which means that patients recover faster, unlike classical intervention.

Demetrian was the director of the district hospital in Craiova and the head of the thoracic surgery department of the medical department.
