President of the U.S.A Joe Biden criticized today once again the arrest of the American Wall Street Journal journalist Ivan Gerskovich in Russia as a suspect in “espionage”.
Biden called the arrest “completely illegal”: “We made it clear that what was happening is absolutely illegal,” he told reporters as he traveled to Northern Ireland.
The US president said he unsuccessfully tried to contact the imprisoned journalist’s family on Monday and would try again on a flight to Belfast.
The WSJ reporter was arrested on March 29 in Yekaterinburg by the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB). He will remain in custody until May 29 and faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted of espionage..
Yesterday, the US State Department officially called the detention of Ivan Gerskovich “illegal”, handing over the materials of the case to the special envoy for hostage affairs, Roster Carstens.
This development “changes the dynamic,” President Biden said.
