Canada on Tuesday imposed new sanctions over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and pledged new military support to Kyiv, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said after meeting with Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmygal in Toronto, Reuters reported.

According to Trudeau, Canada will send 21,000 assault rifles, 38 machine guns and 2.4 million rounds of ammunition to Ukraine, as well as impose sanctions against 14 Russians and 34 Russian organizations, including those associated with the Wagner group.

“We will continue to support Ukraine with everything necessary as long as it is needed,” he said.

Canada has pledged more than $8 billion in financial, military, humanitarian and other aid to Ukraine since January 2022, even before the invasion in late February.

According to Trudeau, Canada is also imposing sanctions on nine organizations linked to the financial sector in Belarus to increase pressure on “supporters of Russia in Belarus.”
