Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in February 2023 ordered government officials to produce more than 40,000 missiles to be sent to Russia, according to documents published Monday by the American newspaper The Washington Post, as cited by EFE. The US does not know that such an agreement between Russia and Egypt has materialized.
Classified documents, accessed by the US press and published on the social media platform Discord, show a series of conversations between al-Sisi and his government officials about the possible sale of arms to Russia.
In one of them, dated February 17, 2023, the president of Egypt instructs a high-ranking official to order the secret production of weapons to “avoid problems with the West,” according to the information published by the American newspaper.
In the same document, the official said he would order his staff to work hard on weapons production because “this is the least Egypt can do to repay Russia for past help,” EFE writes.
A source in the American government assured The Washington Post that the United States is not aware of the implementation of such an agreement between Russia and Egypt.
For its part, the Egyptian embassy in the US did not confirm the authenticity of the document to the American newspaper and limited itself to assurances that the Al-Sisi regime takes a position of non-interference in the war in Ukraine.
The release of this document comes a few days after Twitter and Telegram published a series of original documents in the possession of the Pentagon, with data on the supply of weapons to Ukraine and references to the capabilities of Ukrainian battalions, reports EFE.
At a press conference on Monday, John Kirby, a spokesman for the White House, explained that senior US officials had been speaking with some of Washington’s closest allies “at the highest level” in recent days to discuss the leaked documents. .
In addition, Kirby assured that the administration of US President Joe Biden is doing everything possible to identify the source of the leak, but has not yet achieved this. (Agerpress)
