Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu announced today that it will not eventually fire Secretary of Defense Yoav Gallad, citing a growing security crisis.
In essence, Netanyahu is reversing the earlier decision and will not remove the minister, who at the end of March distanced himself from the Netanyahu government and asked in a statement to “freeze” the reform of the justice system that was being promoted.
Netanyahu said today that the dispute between them has been resolved. Netanyahu moved into action last week, saying he would delay Gallant’s suspension.
“I have decided to put our differences aside,” Netanyahu said at a press conference today, adding that he has worked closely with the defense minister over the past two weeks.
Netanyahu’s government has temporarily halted the revision of legislation in order to hold a new round of consultations with opposition parties after weeks of protests across the country.
A poll released on Sunday showed that Netanyahu’s Likud party would lose more than a third of its seats if elections were held now.
According to the poll, Netanyahu will not be able to win a majority, even with far-right parties in his coalition.
“The poll doesn’t bother me,” the prime minister commented to reporters.
Relations with the United States remain close, he said, although they seemed strained due to the planned revision of the legislation.
