Former US Attorney General Bill Barr said on Sunday that investigators investigating former President Donald Trump likely have “evidence” that he tried to stop authorities from finding classified documents after he left the White House.
The investigation is part of a federal investigation into whether Trump illegally deleted documents when he left the White House in 2021 after losing the election to Democrat Joe Biden. During the course of the investigation, the FBI seized eleven sets of classified documents from the Mar-a-Lago mansion, some of which had the highest level of classified US national security information. These documents can only be accessed by certain US government agencies.
“There was no reason for him to have these documents, especially secret documents. They belonged to the government. Well, I think he was joking. And they tried to get him to hand them over,” Barr said. “But the government is investigating the extent to which the games were held and whether there were obstructions. And I think this is a serious potential case. I think they probably have strong evidence,” the former Trump administration official added.
On Sunday, he reiterated that of all the legal issues Trump faces, the investigation of classified documents is the one “that should concern us the most.”
Barr, who served as Trump’s attorney general from 2019 to 2020, fell out with the former president after leaving the administration.
