Latvians decided to build a fence on the border with Belarus back in 2016 to prevent illegal migrants from crossing the border. By April, a distance of 54 kilometers had been built, which is only part of the total distance over which the fence is supposed to be built.

“We are already seeing results, which allows us to start work without further delay,” said Renars Grishkevics, president of the Latvian Real Estate Fund Council.

Two other countries, Poland and Lithuania, have decided to build fences on the border with Belarus as well, to avoid the arrival of large numbers of illegal migrants from Iraq and Syria from Belarus.
