At least two migrants have died and about 20 more are missing after their boat capsized between Tunisia and Italy, German NGO ResQship said.
Twenty-two people were also rescued from the NGO ship Nadir after a shipwreck on the night of Saturday to Sunday. They landed on the Italian island of Lampedusa on Sunday afternoon, explained Stefan Seifert, one of ResQship’s leaders.
Among them were men, women and children from Ivory Coast, Mali and Cameroon, among others, said Captain Nadir, who was on board at the time of the rescue.
The pregnant woman was rescued while the bodies of the two men were being collected, he said.
According to Seifert, there were about 40 migrants on board this boat, which departed from the Tunisian city of Sfax.
“We did our best to save more people, but we didn’t succeed,” he added, applauding the “good cooperation” with the Italian Coast Guard.
According to the Italian news agency Ansa, among the rescued nine women, 18 people are missing. They all reportedly paid 3,000 Tunisian dinars (about €900) each to board a small boat.
