The U.S. Department of Justice announced today that it is appealing a decision by a federal judge in Texas to suspend driver’s licenses – statewide. USA mifepristone tablets used for medical termination of pregnancy.
The government “strongly disagrees with this decision,” U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland said as he announced the appeal and condemned the judge’s decision as “contradictory to the opinion of experts from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) who have made decisions for more than 20 years. “. years that mifepristone is safe and effective.”
A ban on abortion pills “threatens women’s rights” in the US, said US Vice President Kamala Harris.
Ten months after a landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision that gave every U.S. state the right to ban abortion on its territory, conservative Judge Matthew Kasmerick ruled to ban mifepristone pills at the federal level after appeals from anti-abortion protesters.
At the same time, however, a judge in Washington ruled that marketing authorization for these drugs could not be suspended in at least 12 states.
Therefore, the Supreme Court, whose composition was revised by former US President Republican Donald Trump, should clarify the situation.
Kasmerick’s decision will not take effect for at least a week after the judge gave the federal government time to appeal.
“It’s a shame,” Planned Parenthood President Alexis McGill Johnson said. “We should all be outraged that a judge unilaterally dismisses medical evidence.”
Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer criticized the “activist judge” decision, which “sets a dangerous precedent.”
Matthew Kasmerick was a consultant to a conservative Christian organization before being appointed by former US President Donald Trump as a federal judge.
Clinics offering abortion services have announced that if mifepristone is banned, they will use misoprostol for medical abortion. However, the exclusive use of misoprostol preparations is not considered as effective.
