Jessica Pegula knocked out Iryna Bega of Charleston

The Romanian, who is ranked 37th in the WTA rankings, had a good overall match against the main favorite, whom she confused quite a bit.

Unfortunately, the lack of concentration took its toll, as the decisive score was 4:0.

Jessica Pegula (3 WTA) completed the match in two hours and 32 minutes and will meet the former WTA No. 2 in the quarterfinals.

Iryna Begu held on quite well in the first set, managing to recover from 4-2 and even increase the score to 5-4 in her favor. However, the Romanian also had 4 double faults that cost her, unlike her opponent who had none.

After taking the first set, Pegula got into a rhythm in the second act and quickly made it 4-0, but Iryna made an impressive comeback and won 6 straight games to take the second act.

It came to a decisive one, where Iryna completely controlled the match until the score was 4-0. Although she came very close to winning the match, Begu inexplicably collapsed and this time lost 6 games in a row.

Pegul’s victory and thus ends a nightmare game for the Romanian.

As a result of this performance, Iryna Begu received a check for $9,900 and 55 points in the WTA singles ranking.

Jessica Pegula will meet Paula Badosa (33 WTA) in the quarterfinals. Iberica advanced to the round of 16 against Diana Schneider, 6-1, 6-3.

Charleston Open 2023 will be held from April 3 to 9 on clay and is part of the WTA 500 category. The total prize money of the tournament is $780,637 and the champion of the title is Belinda Bencic.
