A 41-year-old woman has died after being save a 21 year old girl while climbing a frozen waterfall in Utah.
The Duchenne County Sheriff’s Office said it was notified Sunday of a block of ice falling as a group of three climbers attempted to climb the frozen Raven Falls.
Meg O’Neill, 41, pushed her 21-year-old passenger out of harm’s way, “which probably saved her life.” According to authorities, the second woman managed to get out and drive to the city to call for help.
“Unfortunately, the climber who pushed her friend out of the way of the ice that had broken away was trapped under two massive blocks of ice and did not survive,” authorities said.
The third climber, 34-year-old man, fell from a height of more than 12 meters during the separation of the ice section and was airlifted to the hospital with severe injuries.
“Our Meg had a terrible accident while climbing in Duchenne. In an act so out of character for her, she made sure the other two were safe before falling ice shards killed her. The search and rescue team was able to locate her, confirming that her death was instantaneous,” Embark Outdoors, the migrant women’s organization where the 41-year-old worked, said in a statement.
