UEFA did not exclude Belarus from qualifying for EURO 2024

The decision of the European Forum was made despite the call of about 100 MEPs to exclude this country from all competitions due to its ties with Russia, AFP reports, Agerpes reports.

UEFA’s executive committee only decided to withdraw Belarus from hosting the European Under-19 Women’s Championship in 2025, but its national teams and clubs remain eligible to compete in international competitions.

“I said that the matter will be discussed and I also said that only the executive committee has the right to make a decision and no one else. We had a discussion, we removed the organization of the European Championship among girls under 19 years of age. Otherwise, we will study the situation and see what we will decide or not at the next meeting of the executive committee, on June 28,” Ceferin explained.

Backed by Russia and kicked out of the competition by UEFA and FIFA after the invasion of Ukraine, Belarus made their EURO 2024 preliminary tournament debut with two defeats in Group I against Switzerland (0-5) and Romania (1-2).

But in mid-March, a hundred MEPs from all political categories appealed to UEFA to impose the same sanctions on Belarus as against Russia.

“UEFA notes the disturbing events you mention in your letter. (…) UEFA has long intended to discuss the situation in Belarus at the next meeting of our executive committee,” Alexander Ceferin replied in a letter dated March 24, which was noted by the German TV channel ARD. .
