German Chancellor Olaf Scholz today assured Sweden of Berlin’s “support” for its NATO membership, currently blocked by Turkey and Hungary, and congratulated Finland on joining the Alliance.

“Finland is now a member of NATO, which is good news and a benefit for transatlantic security. The accession of Sweden, which has not yet taken place, has our full support!” the German Chancellor wrote in a Twitter post.
At the same time, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed “heartfelt congratulations” to Finland on joining NATO, which, according to Zelensky, is “the only effective guarantee in the region” from “Russian aggression.”
