The platforms Airbnb, Booking, Expedia Group and Trip Advisor have given tourism a significant boost, and many people choose to use them to choose where they stay for their holidays. According to data published by Eurostat, their use for short-term rentals across Europe continues to grow.

The increase between 2021, which has been hit hard by the effects of the pandemic, and 2022 reaches 50%with another 183 million overnight stays, while even 2019, a record year for tourism, was surpassed, by 7%. For the last quarter of 2022, this growth was 25% compared to the same period in 2021.

Bookings through certain platforms have also increased in Greece, but the geographic distribution has marked an important division. In particular, the total number of overnight stays increased in 2022 to 25.5 million overnight stays compared to 24.3 million in 2019.. At the same time, however, the number of bookings has remained relatively unchanged, falling by several tens of thousands between 2019 and 2022, indicating that the length of nights booked through these platforms may be increasing. It seems that the most bookings are still made on Atticaalthough this has decreased compared to 2019, while South Aegean region it follows pretty close.

Between 2019 and 2022, there were significant changes in the number of bookings made through the Airbnb, Booking, Expedia Group and Trip Advisor platforms. On the other hand, the South Aegean, Crete and the Ionian Sea are seeing significant increases in bookings.

The South Aegean is even in the top 20 regions of Europe. with the most overnight stays between July and September 2022. However, the change appears to be more visible in the Ionian Islands, where over 60,000 bookings have been registered through certain platforms.
