Files to the left: Banned for retirees soon! News from Auto Plus in your smartphone News from Auto Plus in your mailbox

Last month we already talked about an event aimed at terminate the lifetime license. This was aimed, in particular, at elderly motorists, involved in 82% of fatal cases according to Traffic safety. This time in an already complex social context, the government will decide on an even more restrictive measure. A law aimed at clean and simple to ban the left lane for seniors!

Why this new measure?

As you know, there are many accidents involving the elderly on the roads. According to estimates inNational Interministerial Observatory of Road Traffic Safety (ONISR), the death rate of people over 65 has increased dramatically since 2015. Thus, drivers over 75 will be 1.6 times more likely to die on the road than car drivers in general. In this sense and after consulting on road safety, the government is considering a new draft law. The idea is to permanently limit the left lane for elderly motorists. Indeed, as recent research on the subject reminds us, it has been scientifically proven that the physiological and cognitive abilities required for good driving tend to decline from the age of 45. Rheumatism can limit range of motion, impair vision and hearing, medications reduce alertness, and coordination is impaired. The left lane, reserved for overtaking, therefore will be banned to limit accidents!

At what age to start?

In an already extremely tense social context, including the 64-year-old retirement law, the government made its decision. In the interest of fairness and according to recent surveys carried out in close collaboration with Road Safety, the age was set at 70!

How will the police and gendarmes control?

However, there is a serious problem. How easy is it to recognize elderly people on the road? At the interrogation of the editors, a member of the road platoons (PA) of the gendarmerie testified:

After consultation with the government teams working on this bill, a solution was found. Just like the “A” badge stuck on young driver of vehicles, an “S” sticker for a senior must be placed on the rear window of the vehicle. That way, they will be easy to spot on the left lane!

What is the penalty in case of violation?

That would be a violation 2nd classwith a fine of up to 150 euros. On the other hand, at the first relapse of the offender, 3 points will be deducted. For the 2nd relapse, the sanction will be 6 points.
Currently, the text of the law has just been submitted for finalization this April 1, and it can be thoroughly reconstructed. To the editor from AutoPlus, we worry about our elders, even if it’s hard to believe it… We can already imagine the heated debate in the semi-circle after weeks of battle over pension reform!
