Germany: King Charles’ visit ends in Hamburg

The first part of his speech was devoted to memories of World War II. King Charles III in Hamburg, where the monarch’s three-day visit to Germany, his first official visit abroad, will end tonight.

Charles III and royal wife Camilla, accompanied by the Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife Elke Budenbendertraveled from Berlin by express. At the arrival station, they were met by local schoolchildren.

The first stop in Hamburg was at the Children’s Transport Memorial, from where, between December 1938 and August 1939, over 10,000 children, mostly Jews, were transported by rail to the UK.

The events are commemorated by a sculpture depicting the moment when two children say goodbye to the platform, and a young woman and four other children are left behind. The king laid a bouquet of white roses on this place. In 2006, he unveiled a similar monument called “Children’s Transport – Arrivals” in Liverpool Street, London.

After that, the British monarch laid a wreath at the monument to St. Nicholas. The church is dedicated to over 35,000 victims of the 1943 US-British bombing of Hamburg as part of Operation Gomorrah. A British official visited the site for the first time.

Karolos and Camila again spent a lot of time meeting with the townspeople who had gathered in the open market of the town hall.
