Two regional trains derailed in northwestern Switzerland on Friday just a few dozen kilometers apart, injuring several people, Bern cantonal police said, according to AFP.

The first train derailed around 4:30 p.m. (2:30 p.m. GMT) between Lüscherz and Biel, and the second about twenty minutes later around the town of Buren zum Hof, police spokeswoman Florina Schenk told AFP, adding that the intervention of rescue services – police, ambulance. and the fire brigade – continued early in the evening.

Police have not been able to explain the reasons for these consecutive derailments, which occurred north of the Swiss capital. According to RBS (Regionalverkehr Bern-Solothurn), strong gale-force winds that crossed Switzerland on Friday are likely the cause of the second derailment.

At the first derailment, “the rear part of the train overturned to the right side,” the police spokesman explained. The accident occurred on the line that runs along Lake Biel and is operated by Aare Seeland mobil (Asm).

According to MeteoSwiss, strong gusts were usually accompanied by showers and thunderstorms, which warned in the morning that wind speeds could reach 80-110 km/h in the plains and 100-140 km/h in the mountains.
