The specific cinemas “Ideal” and “Astor” do not meet the conditions established by law 4858/2021 in order to be classified as a monument and fall under the enhanced protection of this law.
In December 2022, the Ministry of Natural Resources sent resolutions and letters from cinema operators to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Energy in order to properly process them.
Concerns that the end credits are close
It is recalled that both Ideal and Astor have concerns that the end credits may be close. In particular, after e-EFKA and the current owner of the historic Athens theaters launched a tender for the construction of two cinemas a few months ago, their future was considered uncertain.
Since then, a mobilization has begun to ask the competent Ministry of the Environment and Energy to declare the two cinemas protected, and the film world and ordinary film lovers send an SOS signal.
Initially there were assurances that the use of the two cinemas would not be affected. The Municipal Council of the Municipality of Athens unanimously supported the preservation of two important monuments of the cultural history of Athens. However, a few days ago, e-EFKA filed an objection with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs asking that the center’s two cinemas not be declared mothballed, as it argued that it would affect necessary repairs for new use. buildings.
