The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba, criticized on Thursday on Twitter the fact that Russia will take over the presidency of the UN Security Council from Saturday.

“Russia’s chairmanship of the UN Security Council since April 1 is a bad joke. Russia usurped its place; wage a colonial war; its leader is a war criminal wanted by the ICC for child abduction. The world cannot be a safe place with Russia in the UN Security Council,” Kuleba wrote.

The last time Russia chaired the Security Council was in February 2022, at the end of the month it launched an invasion of Ukraine.

What does the UN Security Council do?

The mission of the UN Security Council is to resolve any disputes that threaten international peace, News.ro notes. If diplomatic efforts fail, the Council can impose sanctions and authorize the use of force.

It consists of 15 members, each of whom has one vote.

Five of them are permanent members – USA, Russia, China, France and Great Britain.

Other members are elected by the UN General Assembly for a two-year term.

A majority of nine votes is required to make a decision.

But each permanent member of the Council has the right of veto.

If he uses this veto, the resolution supported by the majority of the Council’s members becomes invalid.
