The government coalition does not mathematically need the UDMR to maintain its parliamentary majority, but the Hungarian Democratic Union in Romania “is an essential factor in the stability of this coalition,” MEP Julio Winkler, president of the UDMR, told Hunedoara in Brussels on Wednesday.
“Regarding the future of the ruling coalition, we are well aware of the following: mathematically, this coalition does not need UDMR. But, on the other hand, we are convinced that the UDMR is an essential factor in the stability of this coalition. Previously, in Romania there were coalitions with large percentages, which did nothing with these percentages,” said Winkler.
Regarding the government circular, according to which the PNL will cede the position of Prime Minister to the PSD, Juliu Winkler stated that the UDMR is not involved in this process.
“We have a very simple attitude to the rotating government, namely on the basis of the (rotating) protocol. The Protocol applies to PSD and PNL and does not apply to UDMR. The protocol was signed by the two presidents, PNL and PSD, in the presence of the UDMR president, but without our signature or participation. We support the agreement of the two parties (larger in the coalition). In the protocol, nothing is written about the ministries of UDMR, nothing is written about the general assessment. We are not part of this agreement to change the prime minister,” UDMR President Hunedoara also stated.
In the context, he believes that there is “no reason” for a possible reassessment of UDMR ministers, but “these are things that are decided in the coalition.”
With regard to the law on education, the UDMR wants a quick adoption of the controversial project, holding the Government accountable, bypassing the parliamentary procedure.
“The president of UDMR Kelemen Hunor proposed to adopt the law on education, involving the responsibility of the Government, because the cavalcade of amendments that will come – and we have the experience of 2014 or when the last law on education was passed – some of these amendments. will be aimed at weakening education in minority languages and Hungarian. If Parliament cannot pass this law on time, it will not be effective from September, but from next September, because I cannot pass an education law in July, when I should already have the structure of the new academic year. “, MEP Winkler added.
During this period, the UDMR conducts a consultation campaign with the Hungarian community in Romania “about the opinion it has on the effectiveness of the UDMR in managing what we should do”. “In the next 2-3 weeks it will be completed, we will draw certain conclusions, because what we are doing may not be fully understood, may not be sufficiently visible to the community. If you managed to repair the road, the neighbors ask you why you didn’t repair my road too,” said Juliu Winkler.
