It is praised by those who “piloted” it in Gran Turismo and those who admired it in “The Fast and the Furious”. Nissan Skyline, one of the Japanese icons of the 1990s, will soon be talked about again.

Indeed, Nissan has just released a rather ambiguous first video that hints the appearance of the 100% electric Skyline. The name of this project? R32EV.

First step?

The video above shows the Nissan Skyline R32 (sold in Japan between 1989 and 1994), but still with its own heat engine. In the video, the exhaust can be seen and the six-cylinder engine can be clearly heard, but the “R32EV” project hints that the brand will soon install a 100% electric powertrain.

The project appears to be more than just a publicity stunt, so much so that Nissan has opened a dedicated page on its Japanese website where new information will be provided as the project progresses.

In the brand’s Twitter account, we can also read the words of the engineer responsible for this project, who says that we will soon see “an even more exciting car to drive thanks to electrification”.

Looking forward to the upcoming Skyline electric SUV?

Given the enthusiasm generated by Nissan around this project, the manufacturer seems to want to go beyond a simple “restomod” of the old Skyline. Indeed, a few weeks ago we already talked about the possible return of the Skyline, but in the form of an electric SUV.

With this project, the Japanese manufacturer seems to want to lower the temperature around this project, and above all, to associate such a mythical name with a body that does not necessarily arouse the interest of all car fans.

Remember, though, that the Skyline name has already been associated with low-cost Nissan products, especially in the United States, but that won’t last long. For its part, Ford has been asking a little less recently about associating the Mustang name with an electric SUV.

So the Nissan Skyline may change its philosophy, but like Ford continuing to make its Mustang last, the resulting model, namely the GT-R, will continue to exist, certainly with a plug-in hybrid engine. next generation
