In 2013, Peugeot opens the curtain on the second generation of its compact station wagon 308. Refuse banana projectors, softened forms, somewhat gloomy silhouette. Lion brand buys a new style in the early 2010s. Already presented at 208 a year earlier, in 2012. The second 308 in name shows a much stronger character than its predecessor. Its silhouette takes pride of place aggressive forms, geometric features, aggressive look. The soffits are piercing. Rear lights are being restored the famous “claw”, which can already be seen on the 508 sedan. In addition, Peugeot presents its latest innovation: the the famous i-Cockpit. With a surprisingly small diameter steering wheel and high-positioned driver’s meters. Its engine offering at launch is very rich.

A wide range of engines

Essentially, the entry level is provided Block 1.2 Puretech 110 horsepower. It is also available in a variant 130 horsepower, which can be combined with the PSA EAT8 dual-clutch internal gearbox. The rest of the gasoline assortment is provided by the older unit, 1.6 THP. This four-cylinder engine is available in three power levels: 125 horsepower, 155 horsepower, even 205 horsepower. The sports version of the GTi has a 1.6 THP with a capacity of 270 horsepower. The diesel is also not bad. The entry-level 1.6 HDi offers a choice of 92, 100, 115 or 120 horsepower. It finishes at the top of the range with a 2.0 HDi unit. It provides two power levels: 150 or 180 horsepower. What can be said about these different engines and the reliability of this 308 II in general?

Its most common problems are:

  • 2 Puretech: Peugeot has issued a recall regarding the condition of the timing belt on models equipped with this engine. Before buying, check whether the car has really been inspected.
  • Timing chain: 1.6 THP gasoline units can be noisy over time, but no breakdowns have been reported.
  • Clutch: On HDi diesel units, the clutch release bearing may fail even up to 80,000 kilometers, requiring its replacement.
  • Air conditioner: Some owners have reported cases of malfunctions or inefficiencies.
  • AdBlue tank: This is a problem well known to owners of BlueHDi versions: the AdBlue tank can deform abnormally and its AdBlue pump can fail.
  • Body: It’s quieter in that regard because the 308 looks good, but some parts can corrode or fall apart over time.
  • Interior: The kit is high quality and fairly well finished, apart from the plastic used for the center console, the materials of which are disappointing.
