The Hungarian parliament today ratified Finland’s NATO membership after several months of delay, bringing Helsinki one step closer to joining the Alliance.
Finland’s request was accepted by an overwhelming majority of MEPs (182 out of 199) who voted in favor. However, the case of Sweden “will be discussed later”.
Finland and Sweden applied together to join NATO after Russia invaded Ukraine. However, the process, especially for Sweden, is still under consideration by the Turkish and Hungarian parliaments.
In order for two countries to join the process, the approval of all 30 NATO member countries must be obtained in advance.
