In 1963, Ferruccio Lamborghini founded Automobili Lamborghini and built a new factory near Sant’Agata Bolognese, in the Emilia-Romagna region. The construction of the plant is fast, to say the least, because in October of the same year when Lamborghini presented its first car, the prototype 350 GTV, the main structure of the factory has already been completed.

Today, Automobili Lamborghini is a world-renowned company with more than 2,000 employees. produces more than 9,000 cars per year. Over the past 60 years, the Lamborghini headquarters has undergone improvements, expansions and reconfigurations to meet the needs of production, the environment and technology.

Evolution of Lamborghini production

Production rose from 67 Lamborghinis in 1965 to 425 in 1971, stabilizing at around 450 cars per year over the following years. During this period, Ferruccio Lamborghini remained very involved, leading the development of cars such as the amazing Miura, the four-seater Espada GT or even the Countach.

In the 1980s, production reached 470 cars, and more than 300 marine engines have been assembledbecause yes, Lamborghini also assembled boat engines at the time.

In 1974, Ferruccio Lamborghini sold the company, which then changed hands. Chrysler Corporation bought it in 1987 and produced the Diablo before selling it to a Malaysian consortium in 1994. In 1998, Volkswagen AG acquired it, leading to a period of modernization and growth.

Five years later, on his 40th birthday^thousand anniversary, the company opened Lamborghini Centro Stile, which is a showcase of classic Lamborghinis. At that time, the Italian company employed 624 people and produced more than 1,300 cars a year.

The factory is 13 times larger than at the beginning

In 2008, the factory expanded again to include a personalization department and a logistics center. This expansion was followed by additional capacity to develop the new Aventador carbon fiber body in-house, thus launching the Lamborghini Carbon Manufacturing Center. In 2012, Lamborghini’s production exceeded 2,000 cars per year and is expected to quadruple by 2020.

Much of the increase in production is attributed to the Lamborghini Urus. Released in 2018, it quickly became a bestseller for the Italian brand. To accommodate its new model, the plant expanded again to 160,000 m², more than 13 times larger than the original factory in 1963.
