“It is clear as day that we support Sweden’s accession (to NATO), the government has already made a decision and it is now in the parliament, but there is a small problem here,” said Balazs Orbán on Hungarian Public Radio, reports the MTI agency. quoted by Agerpres.

“Some Hungarian parliamentarians feel uncomfortable (about this accession) because they saw how in recent years some members of the Swedish government made it a habit to always question the state of democracy in Hungary, they insulted voters and Hungarians. parliamentarians, and with them the whole of Hungary,” explained the Hungarian official.

Hungary does not express positions on issues related to Sweden’s internal affairs and expects the same from this country, and “Hungarian parliamentarians expect assurances (from members of the Swedish government) that there will be no more political debates between them (about Hungary) and that there are no problems with the basics of Hungarian-Swedish cooperation,” Baláš Orbán said.

In the case of Finland, there is Hungary’s “unique historical friendship and alliance” with that country and “it seems that we managed to get assurances from the Finns that these problems will not exist in the future”, but the situation is like this. otherwise in the case of Sweden, the same Hungarian official further explained.

Turkey and Hungary are the only NATO members that have yet to ratify the membership of Sweden and Finland, which Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán accused of spreading “brazen lies” about the status of democracy and the state. law in Hungary.

But last Friday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that he had finally agreed to Finland joining the alliance, and the parliament in Ankara had ratified it. As for the ratification of Sweden’s accession, Erdogan said it was still waiting because the government in Stockholm had not granted Ankara’s requests to extradite to Turkey people it believed to be linked to terrorist organizations, particularly from the Kurdish region.

Immediately after the Turkish president’s statement, Hungary announced that it would ratify Finland’s accession to NATO on March 27.
