Russia has not currently stationed any nuclear missiles in Belarus, the White House said, according to CNN and News.ro.

“We’ll have to see where it goes,” White House National Security Council (NSC) spokesman John Kirby said when asked about Russian President Vladimir Putin’s announcement to deploy tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus.

“I don’t see any indication that he’s followed through on that promise or that he’s moved any nuclear weapons,” Kirby told Margaret Brennan on CBS’ “Face The Nation.”

Vladimir Putin announced on Saturday that Russia intended to deploy “tactical” nuclear weapons in Belarus and that ten aircraft were ready to deploy such weapons.

The United States downplayed the claim and said there was no indication that Russia intended to use nuclear weapons.

Ukraine, for its part, considers this a “step towards internal destabilization” of Belarus.

Belarus, an ally of Moscow, borders Ukraine, as well as Poland and Lithuania, two member states of the European Union (EU) and NATO.

Belarus is not directly involved in the conflict in Ukraine, but Moscow used Belarusian territory to stage its offensive on Kyiv last year and to carry out airstrikes, Ukrainian authorities charge.
