NATO called Russia’s position “dangerous and irresponsible” the day after statement by Vladimir Putin on the development of tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus.
“NATO is on high alert and we are monitoring the situation closely. We have not seen any changes in the location of Russia’s nuclear arsenal that would force us to change ours, ”said the representative of the Atlantic Alliance.
“Russia’s reference to NATO nuclear sharing is completely misleading. NATO allies act in full compliance with their international obligations. “Russia has systematically violated its own obligations arising from the arms control process, most recently by suspending its participation in the new START treaty,” the NATO spokesman said.
Kyiv calls for an emergency meeting of the Security Council
At the same time, Ukraine requested an urgent convening of the UN Security Council and asked the West and China to put an end to Russia’s “nuclear hostage” practice.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said in a statement: “Ukraine expects the UK, China, the US and France to take effective action to counter the Kremlin’s nuclear blackmail. We ask for an emergency convening of the UN Security Council for this purpose.”
