USR Senator Cristian Bordei submitted to the parliament a draft law that proposes that members of the diplomatic and consular corps of Romania speak at least two foreign languages, one of which is international.

“We need well-trained people in this body who are able to conduct substantive dialogue with their colleagues from other countries without intermediaries. With this draft law, I want to correct, from this point of view, the shortcomings of the current legislation regarding the selection of employees of the diplomatic and consular corps. Diplomatic activity is not conducted in any foreign language, and multilingualism is a policy adopted at the level of the European Union institutions,” said Christian Bordei, secretary of the Senate’s foreign policy committee, according to a press release cited by Agerpres.

According to the cited source, the legislative initiative amends Law No. 2000. 269/2003 on the Statute of the Diplomatic and Consular Corps of Romania and “solves a problem that has been reported since 2003,” when the Legislative Council declared that it was important for Romanian diplomats to know an international language to avoid language barriers in their activities.
