The director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Raphael Grossi, announced on Saturday that next week he will travel to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in southeastern Ukraine for the second time since the Russian invasion to “directly assess”. the situation from the point of view of nuclear safety”.
“Despite our seven-month presence, the situation at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant remains unstable,” Grossi said in a statement, according to Agerpres.
“The danger to nuclear safety is very clear, as is the need to act now to avoid an accident,” he added.
Grossi suggested creating a security zone around the plant.
A new group of experts will accompany the IAEA director, and the agency will maintain a permanent presence at the plant starting in September.
According to the IAEA, the February rotation was postponed for almost a month, which complains about “very difficult circumstances that the experts had to face.”
