State Duma speaker Vyacheslav Volodin proposed today to ban the International Criminal Court in Russia after it issued an arrest warrant for President Vladimir Putin accusing him of war crimes.
Volodin said Russian law should be amended to ban any ICC activity in the country and punish anyone who provides it with “help and support.”
“It is necessary to study amendments to the legislation prohibiting any activity of the ICC on the territory of our country,” he said in a Telegram message. He added that any assistance or support to the Court should be punishable by law.
Earlier this month, the ICC issued an arrest warrant for Putin, accusing him of illegally deporting hundreds of children from Ukraine to Russia.
The Kremlin canceled the arrest warrant, although it considers it meaningless.
Russia, the US and China are not members of the ICC, but 123 countries have signed the Rome Convention. Ukraine is also not a member of the ICC, but Kyiv has given it permission to investigate crimes committed on its territory.
