European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will travel to China with French President Emmanuel Macron in the first week of April, an EU official said today, without giving details.
From Paris, the French president recalled that he was “committed to coordinating and expressing the European voice” against Russia and the war in Ukraine.
“We must try to get China on our side as much as possible in order to put pressure on Russia so that it safely does not use chemical or nuclear weapons and ends the conflict, returns to the negotiating table and achieves respect for international law, that is, the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine,” he specified.
Ursula von der Leyen is expected to speak in Brussels on EU-China relations.
In related discussions last fall, European leaders appeared to want to find their own way with China without joining the US.
