Determined to continue with “responsible judicial reforms,” the Israeli prime minister appeared. Benjamin Netanyahuafter a meeting with the Minister of Defense Joab Gallant.
“We cannot allow any disagreement to jeopardize our common future.Netanyahu said, promising to do whatever it takes to find a solution “acceptable to defenders and critics alike” of the reform.
Israel’s prime minister summoned the defense minister this afternoon following media reports that Gallant intended to call for a halt to a controversial reform of the judiciary that sparked unprecedented protests across the country.
For his part, the defense minister confirmed reports that he intended to make a public statement on the matter, but decided not to do so until after the prime minister’s speech. According to the Ministry of Defense, Gallant briefed the prime minister on the impact on national security of the social unrest caused by the backlash against the reform being promoted.
In his first public statement since the Israeli Prime Minister, opposition leader Yair Lapid called on the leaders of the Nenaniya (Likud) party to show responsibility by blocking the government’s plan to reform the judiciary.
At the same time, thousands of Israelis today took to the streets en masse to protest the government’s reform of the judiciary, blocking roads across the country.
With flags and banners, they went out onto the central street of Tel Aviv, stopping traffic. A small group set fire to car tires on the road outside the port, briefly blocking the passage of trucks. Police forced protesters off the street in front of a convention center in central Israel.
