The cycle of questioning witnesses for the prosecution in a mixed jury trial in Thessaloniki over 12 defendants in the case of the murder of 19-year-old Alkis Campanos and the wounding of two of his friends ends on Thursday.
The last of the 26 witnesses for the prosecution gave evidence to a friend of Alkis, who was in the company of five young people, when in the early morning of February 1 in the area of the city of Kharilau.
The 20-year-old was lucky because he managed to escape the scene of the attack (as did another member of the same group) by jumping off the steps of an apartment building where five friends were gathered and unsuspectingly talking. The same witness (the twin brother of one of the two victims) ran towards Papanastasiou Street and asked the patrons of a nearby tavern to call an ambulance.
Following the testimony of a particular witness, the court is expected to rule on a number of motions that have been made in previous hearings by the defense lawyers, such as for example that the police from the Thessaloniki Sub-Directory for Combating Violence in Sports be called to testify.
