Work on the high-speed road in the west of the country began in 2022, and there is a real possibility that a large part of the project will be open to traffic this year. We are talking about the road connection between the Oradea ring road and the A3 highway and, practically, the first real kilometers of the expressway in Ardeal.

“The first kilometers of expressway in Ardeal are planned for 2023,” according to the Pro Infrastructure Association, which released a video showing all 19 kilometers of the Oradea Belt-Highway A3 connection.

The first kilometers of the expressway from Transylvania

The contract for 18.96 kilometers of the road connecting Oradea with the A3 motorway was signed with the Austrians Strabag on 21.07.2021 for the amount of 546 million lei without VAT and involves 6 months of design and 24 months of execution. The technical project was approved on July 4, 2022.

The road with a length of 19 km is built as an expressway for 13 km, and for 6 km as a state road with 4 lanes of traffic with a divider between the directions. When this project is completed, it will practically represent the first real kilometers of expressway in Transylvania.

Unfortunately, the development of the contract has not yet been without problems.

After the contract was signed, the Bihor authorities asked for changes to the project and asked for tickets instead of two roundabouts on the route, changes that cannot be made under the terms of the contract already agreed between the parties.

The connecting road project has a length of 18.96 km, 12 new bridges and crossings (including over Krishul Repede and over Borsului road), as well as 3 road interchanges. It will connect the ring road and the highway from the roundabout area with Calea Sântandrei to Sântandrei – Borș – Biharia.

According to the information in the technical specifications, the road profile will be four-lane with a traffic flow divider in the middle, with a total width of 23.5 meters.
