Hyundai: a robot for charging electric cars News from Auto Plus in your smartphone News from Auto Plus in your inbox

Hyundai has just released the details automatic charging robot (Automatic Charging Robot) for electric vehicles: It has a lever that allows you to connect the cable to the vehicle’s charging port and remove it after charging is complete.

This video details the operation of Hyundai’s Automatic Charging Robot (ACR) used on the Hyundai Ioniq 6, which autonomously parks at an EV charging station:

Hyundai: A robot to improve accessibility

After parking, the ACR robot communicates with the car to open the charging port, calculating the exact location and angle needed for this operation thanks to the camera installed inside. The robot then takes the charger and plugs it into the car’s charging port to start the charging session.

After charging, the robot disconnects the charger, returns it to its place and closes the hatch of the car’s charging port. This robot for automatic charging of electric vehicles was developed by the Hyundai Advanced Robotics Laboratory. During its development, various parameters were taken into account, such as the position of the vehicle, the shape of the charging port, the weather, potential obstacles or the weight of the charging cable.

“ACR will help make charging electric vehicles easier and more convenient, especially in the dark. It will also improve accessibility, especially for people with reduced mobility, as charging cables become thicker and heavier to allow fast charging speeds.”– says Dong Jin Hyun, head of Hyundai Motor Group’s robotics laboratory: “We will continue to develop ACR for greater safety and convenience so that all EV customers can soon benefit from its use at charging stations. »

Hyundai Automatic Charging Robot: built-in artificial intelligence

To safely control its robot, Hyundai has developed a software technology capable of calculating multiple variables simultaneously through an algorithm that usesArtificial Intelligence, as well as a 3D camera. In practice, this allows robots to precisely handle heavy forklifts.

Since most charging stations are installed outdoors, the charging robot has been designed to be waterproof: it meetsprotection class IP65and exhibits improved performance for stable operation even in extreme conditions. The laser sensor also allows you to prevent possible accidents, as well as detect stationary and mobile obstacles.

Hyundai ACR automatic charging robot will be presented to the public during Seoul Mobility Show 2023which will be held from March 31 to April 9, 2023 at the Kintex Exhibition Center located in Koyangsi, Gyeonggi Province in South Korea.
